چکیده

The ability of certain members of the Aerobacter genus to ferment acetyl-methyl-carbinol is indicated by their transitory Voges-Proskauer reactions. These strains produce acetylmethyl-carbinol from glucose and, consequently, yield positive Voges-Proskauer reactions after incubation for from one to three days in Clark and Lubs' medium (1915). When incubation is continued for longer periods, however, the reactions become negative. Paine (1927), and Williams and Morrow (1928) showed that these bacteria "destroyed" the acetyl-methylcarbinol which was present in filtrates of young cultures. In their experiments, the sterile filtrates were inoculated with the cultures to be tested and, after various periods of incubation, the presence or absence of acetyl-methyl-carbinol was determined by the Voges-Proskauer method. A negative reaction was considered as evidence that the acetyl-methyl-carbinol had been "destroyed." Supplementary experiments showed that the negative reactions were not due to an exhaustion of peptone. Williams and Morrow concluded, therefore, that "it seems probable that the compound serves as a source of carbon." Although the work just cited showed that acetyl-methylcarbinol is "destroyed" by certain members of the Escherichia-

Comparison of reagent-impregnated paper strips and conventional tests for distinguishing Escherichia from Aerobacter: correlation with colonial morphology.

The means for distinguishing Escherichia from Aerobacter (Enterobacter) differ in laboratories and range from complete dependence on colonial reactions on typical gram-negative media to reliance on one or more of the classical indole, methyl red, Voges-Proskauer, citrate (IMViC) parameters. Three colonial types (one prejudged as Escherichia) of lactose-positive rods were catalogued on each of t...

A Preliminary Report on Bacillus Coli in the Calcutta Filtered Water Supply

Ti-ie subject of Bacillus coli infection of water supplies has been exhaustively dealt with from time to time by numerous bacteriologists. It may not be out of place here to give a brief note regarding their work?a subject which is well summarised in the textbook of bacteriology by Wilson and Topley. The question of differentiation of strains of coliform bacilli commenced with the work of Kraus...

Voges-Proskauer Test with Leifson's Reagent

At. Most bacteriologists held that the old Voges?SKauer's test (1898) was not a satisfactory test for the differentiation of the coli-serogenes group of organisms. During carbohydrate fermentation by the aerogenes group of bacilli, acetoin (acetylmethyl carbinol) is formed, and this is detected by caustic potash and peptone. Acetoin is oxidized to diacetyl, and this reacts with caustic potash a...
